History & Maintenance

Ownership History

  • Prior to 1987, not much was known about this car. From 1987-2020 registration history shows it spent most of its life in Massachusetts. Then in 2020 the car was sold in Florida and that is where it currently resides.

  • Current ownership completed a pre-sale inspection at the JAP shop in Fort Lauderdale, FL on 9/14/2023. Unsolicited feedback seen on the inspection report reads as follows: “Vehicle was test driven by two shop employees. Both of which boasted about the drivability of this vehicle. For the age, this vehicle is in spectacular condition, of course at the mileage it will have some wear but in comparison to a lot of the ones we get in the shop, it is leagues above them. We've had fully rebuilt aftermarket front-end suspension comes in and this car drives better than those. Interior is also in perfect condition with strong A/C, which is extremely rare on sports cars from this era. Considering the mileage, condition, age and dealership options on the vehicle this car is a one-in-a-lifetime kind of car. Personal Testimony: One of the test drivers is a manager at the shop, he owned one when he was 16/17. After the test drive, he wanted to make an offer immediately. He stated, "This vehicle drives like my brand new one back in 1983". This vehicle will be a gift to anyone who is lucky enough to own it.”

Maintenance Highlights

  • Records indicate periodic maintenance and safety checks throughout the vehicle’s lifespan.

  • Oil was changed 10/2022 @67,057 miles, and again on 9/14/2023 @ 67,151 miles

  • Service in September 2023 included: removal and replacement of the battery, tie rod ends, ball joints, and a four-wheel alignment.

  • The oil pan was removed, cleaned, and reinstalled with new gaskets.

  • Known Flaws

  • Outer seals of drive shaft boots are noted to have a slow leak

Heritage

The Datsun 280ZX had a successful career in motorsports with actor and driver Paul Newman. An early highlight of his decades-long motorsports career was driving for the Bob Sharp racing team in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. During the 1979 season he won races at Summit Point, Watkins Glen, Brainerd (Minn.), Lime Rock, and Road Atlanta, culminating in an SCCA National C-Production Championship. (That same year he would race at Le Mans, finishing second in a Porsche 935.) His winning car was sold in 2020 for an undisclosed sum, and with an asking price of $5M.
