Overview

The first generation Ford F150 Lighting engine had 8.8:1 compression, a 4-inch bore and 3.50-inch stroke. SVT installed GT-40-type cast-iron cylinder heads, a tuned intake manifold, tubular stainless-steel headers, larger intake (1.84-inch) and exhaust valves (1.54-inch), high-flow ports, high-rate capacity fuel pump and injectors, revised combustion chambers, a redesigned air filter for improved airflow and a true dual exhaust system.

Other upgrades for the basic 5.8-liter V-8 included high-silicon aluminum hypereutectic pistons, a special camshaft for optimized valve tuning and a cartridge-type oil-to-water exchanger to control oil temperatures. Engineers also programmed the engine’s computer control to deliver crisp throttle response and acceptable fuel economy. Lightning output resulted in a then very healthy 240hp at 4,200 rpm and 340-lbs.ft. of torque at 3,200 rpm.

When asked what you’ve enjoyed about the truck, the current owner says; “I love how easy it is to drive – there’s no fan fare, the ac works and it feels like a 90’s Ford. OBS (old body style) Fords are the coolest trucks – for me growing up in a blue collar town, I spent my younger years in Fords of that era – cars that I like have nostalgia. Even the noise the AC makes when it kicks on – it’s pure vintage Ford. That was one of the top of the line fords of that era, and for the era it was peak Ford. They had a certain cool factor because not everyone knew what it was. It’s an easy and functional collector car – the audio tapes will go with the car and make the experience complete.”

As to why he’s selling the Lightning, “I need to make room for a heavily modified Grand National that’s coming home and the truck is just too nice – it deserves to live a more posh existence. I spent a year looking for the perfect Lightning but with such low miles I really haven’t been driving it enough.”

Ownership History

The truck was originally registered in Dayton, OH, in May 1993 and remained with the first owner through 2018, accumulating just over 16,000 miles in 15 years of ownership. The vehicle was sold in 2018 and moved to Georgia where approximately 1K miles were added to the odometer. The third owner, and current Seller, acquired the vehicle in 2019, registering the vehicle in Colorado and later in Montana. The vehicle currently resides in Colorado, it is unknown whether it will pass emissions.

Heritage

The 1990’s unleashed the era of the sport truck. Chevy introduced the 454SS in 1990, and two years later GMC crashed the party with a formidable AWD, turbocharged S10 badged as the Syclone. A year later the first generation F150 Lightning joined the line-up for 1993. That same year Ford’s in-house performance division switched its name from SVO to SVT, or Special Vehicles Team, and they enlisted former F1 driver Jackie Stewart to assist in tuning the Lightning’s suspension. Alongside the Lighting, SVO is also responsible for creating the legendary fox body Mustang Cobra. The legacy lives-on some 30 years later with the latest incarnation of the F150 Lightning adopting an all electric powertrain good for a 0-60 mph time of 4.1 seconds.

Interior                  A

The interior of this vehicle is in very good condition. There are no obvious blemishes and no odors. A collection of audio tapes are included in the sale.

Exterior                  A

The exterior  is in remarkable condition, the single stage paint measures evenly with a paint meter with exception to the hood which appears to have been repainted at some point in the vehicles history. A few paint nicks in the wheels and a couple very minor paint imperfections are referenced in the photos

Mechanical           A

The sound of its Windsor V8 is enhanced with a custom exhaust system, giving this truck a proper soundtrack. The lowered stance improves handling and visual appeal, while handling is crisp and responsive. Shifting is smooth. Nothing out of the ordinary was observed during our test drive.

Photographer's notes

While photographing the car, I was also able to drive it a bit. Both on the highway and around the streets. The truck is basically a time capsule and teleports you back into the 90’s. I love the sound of the aftermarket exhaust and enjoyed driving it with the windows down. Handling is comfy and surprisingly responsive for a pick up truck. I got a lot of looks and nods cruising in the Lightning, and a few people commended on how clean the truck is!
