Overview

This is the 5th Ford Escort RS Cosworth we’ve imported and is likely to be the last for the foreseeable future. This car has a documented history from Spain with accompanying Spanish Inspection certificates verifying kilometers. Similar mileage cars are currently selling in Europe for $100K+.

This car is one of the early homologation versions and is equipped with the oversized Garrett T3/T04B Hybrid turbo (also known as the T34) which came standard with an air/water intercooler and 34/66 front/rear split all-wheel drive system. The big turbo Cossie is considered to be more collectible and was only available from 1992-1993. Polaris Silver is also more rare as this color was only available for the 1992 model year. This slick-top example is equipped with power windows, door locks and side view mirrors. This car is fully sorted and everything works as it should.

The buyer will also receive one of these cheeky custom t shirts

History & Maintenance

Repairs and known Issues from the previous owner

We acquired this vehicle from a collector in Spain who recently completed a timing belt replacement and reported the car to be in very good condition. When the car arrived there were a number of issues to be resolved which included:

  • Power steering rack rebuild and re-installed

  • Air conditioning compressor was rebuilt, and a new condenser was installed

  • Replaced multi-plugs and a number of engine sensors

  • Replaced and retrofitted washer pump

  • Replaced battery

  • Repaired vacuum leak

  • As this car is pre-OBD we installed a DTM data monitor in place of the clock.

  • Replaced aging factory shocks with adjustable SPAX struts

  • Fuel pump and regulator were replaced

  • All fluids including gearbox, front and rear differentials, coolant and oil were changed

  • 4 wheel alignment

  • In total just under $20,000 was spent getting this car fully sorted.

Maintenance Highlights

  • Records indicate periodic maintenance and safety checks throughout the vehicle’s lifespan.

  • Oil was changed 10/2022 @67,057 miles, and again on 9/14/2023 @ 67,151 miles

  • Service in September 2023 included: removal and replacement of the battery, tie rod ends, ball joints, and a four-wheel alignment.

  • The oil pan was removed, cleaned, and reinstalled with new gaskets.

  • Known Flaws

  • Outer seals of drive shaft boots are noted to have a slow leak

Heritage

In the early 1990s, rally racing gave birth to a plethora of high-tech, turbocharged machines, especially from the Japanese, with cars like the Mitsubishi Evo, Subaru STI and Toyota Celica GT-Four. The Escort RS Cosworth was Europe’s answer and it was a fierce competitor on both national and international rally’s, claiming it’s first victory in the 1992 Scottish Rally at the hands of Malcom Wilson.

The Escort Cosworth was just as high tech as its Asian rivals, except it had a Ford badge, which made it appear like a genuine home-team effort for European fans. This version of the Escort was, of course, not sold in America, nor was rally racing as popular west of the Atlantic ocean. But in Europe it was the textbook definition of “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday.”

Interior                A+

The Escort’s interior is in great overall condition with no noticeable rips, tears, or stains. The interior features a period correct stereo along with factory gauges for boost, voltage and oil pressure. All functions work as intended, including the A/C which blows cold. The dash is free of cracks, warping or other flaws.

Exterior                A+

Outside, the Cossi presents beautifully, with metallic gray paint that was only offered for the 1992 model year. Designed under the guidance of Rod Mansfield and John Wheeler of Ford's SVO department, the bodywork features muscular box flares and an outrageous bi-level wing. Aside from a very minor rock chip in the windshield and a small area on the lower section of the rear wing where the paint shows very minimal cracking, there are no apparent defects in the rest of the car. All lights work as expected, as do the power windows, windshield wipers and washer squirters. All four wheels are in very good condition and the tires are in good shape but have surpassed the DOT age limitation.

Mechanical         A+

After receiving nearly $20,000 worth of service over the past two years, this Esco runs and drives beautifully. Power from the 2.0 liter turbocharged Cosworth motor comes on strong with typical 1990’s turbo lag. The transmission shifts smoothly and with a light action, especially once up to temperature. The car idles well and can sit comfortably in traffic without overheating.

Photographer's notes

With presumably less than 100 of these cars stateside, I can safely say that I’ll probably never see another one, so spending time with this car was an absolute privilege. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I initially got behind the wheel but the driving experience quickly exceeded my expectations. 227 hp was plenty in the early ‘90s and each and every one of those ponies makes itself felt. The turbo is a little laggy as it builds boost but it creates a sense of anticipation and when the power comes on I find myself grinning.  The gearbox is a joy to use and the steering felt solid and communicative. The Escort RS Cosworth is fun to drive but also great to just ogle at while daydreaming of piloting it on a rally stage.
